Nobody likes to talk about health
care rationing - and that's a big part of the
problem.
The sad fact is, health care
rationing - that is, the withholding of at least some useful medical services from
at least some people who would benefit from those services - is an
economic imperative. Most health care economists accept the
need to ration health care as a first premise, virtually as an
axiom.
Policymakers can't even talk about
making minor (necessary) changes in Social Security without
having their heads handed to them. For them to talk openly about
something as monumental as rationing health care would be suicidal.
Since we can't ration openly, the
only other alternative is to ration covertly. Which is
precisely what we're doing today. In fact, fundamental to the understanding
of our health care system is recognizing how widespread, vigorous, and enthusiastic
the covert rationing of our
health care really is.
As part of our mission to help you
understand and survive the American health care system, YourDoctorintheFamily.com
takes
pains to address all aspects of health care rationing - how we're
doing it now, and how we really ought to be doing it.
The
economic considerations that make rationing imperative are discussed in
The Truth about Health Care
Rationing. We describe covert rationing extensively, both why
we're rationing covertly and why
covert rationing is so destructive.
Since
health care rationing is a given whether we choose to notice it or
not, we make a case for open
rationing, answer the major arguments
against open rationing, and show how
an equitable system of open rationing is possible.
Finally, we
detail how our society can develop
a methodology for open rationing.
Don't thank us. It's what we do.
We're your
on-line guide to understanding and
surviving the American health care system.
